Why LiftHER Career?

After over two decades of working in both for-profit and non-profit sectors, I've witnessed the barriers that hold many young women back from reaching their full potential—especially at the start of their careers. The challenges are even more pronounced for women from immigrant-connected backgrounds, including immigrants, daughters of immigrants, and international students. Too often, these young women lack the mentorship, networks, and career resources that are crucial for success, leading to long-term underemployment and stalled career growth.

My own story is rooted in overcoming such obstacles. My family arrived in the U.S. with little more than a suitcase, and I became the first in my family to attend college, earn an Ivy League degree, and secure executive roles. Much of my success stemmed from early access to mentors, career training, and key opportunities. Sadly, many young women—particularly those from immigrant backgrounds—don’t have the same access, which can leave them at a disadvantage as they start their professional journey.

This is why I founded LiftHER Career. This career launcher is dedicated to helping young women from the start of their career, empowering them with the guidance, networks, and support they need to succeed. At a time when the U.S. faces a talent shortage and bright international students are often overlooked, LiftHER provides critical support to help these students transition into the workforce.

I'm excited to build a community where young women are supported and empowered to transition from college to career with confidence.

an approach informed by research

Our approach is based on what we've observed works over 20+ years of experience AND what research says matters for building professional social capital, the networks of relationships that you have and can access to help you achieve your career goals. The more social capital you have, the more likely you are to find jobs, advance in your career, and be paid more.

LiftHER Career places a strong emphasis on building the essential career skills through our personalized career coaching intensives, social capital in a low pressure, effective manner through our CareerCafe, and further networking opportunities through our Community Forum given the strength of weak ties.

Research Guiding our Approach

A large body of research has influenced our model, but can generally be summarized by the following resources.

  • The Career Arts from higher education expert Ben Wildavsky who proposes that social capital is one of 8 career arts that students must master to make the most of college.

  • Clayton Christensen Institute's framework for measuring student's social capital: size, depth, diversity, and ability to mobilize.

  • Mark Granovetter, Stanford sociologist who first proposed "The Strength of Weak Ties".  Weak ties which power the diversity of networks, are the key to upward mobility.

  • LinkedIn's research on “People You May Know” algorithm which proved the strength of of weak ties.
